Torre di Montemaggio IGT is a red Tuscan wine made from pure Merlot. It is one of the first wines that was produced at Montemaggio. Its name is derived from the 14th century tower that once stood above the old Roman road between Siena and Florence. An intense ruby color, elegant taste, delicate bouquet, full of berry tones characterize this wine, whose full flavour and balanced acidity is highly esteemed abroad as well.
The reason why Torre was done initially is to minimise the quantity of Merlot that we include in our Chianti Classico range and to be able to offer a more modern alternative to our Traditional Chianti Wines. This pure Merlot however is very different from the Merlots that you are used to and we often call it Merlot di Sangiovese, as it has the same freshness and minerality as Sangiovese. Both wines take these unique characteristics from the terroir of course and are perfect examples of “Terroir” wines.
Following a careful selection of the best Merlot grapes towards the end of September, fermentation takes place for long time at a controlled temperature (not higher than 26°C) in stainless steel and wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation undergoes in stainless steel vats. Maturation follows in barrels mainly from second passage and partially in tonneaux (5 Hl).
