Merlots of this quality are really only known from central Tuscany. And when one of the best Brunello producers cultivates a small parcel of Merlot and does not bottle a single-varietal Supertuscan just for fun, one has to be more than alert. The serious experiment has paid off: Joanni is a rich and multilayered red wine that offers aromas of currants and blackberries with hints of dark chocolate and vanilla beans. With further aeration, dark plums, blueberry pie, dark spices and vanilla reveal themselves. It is full-bodied and juicy - yet never overloaded - with tangy acidity, round tannins and a flavourful, very buoyant finish. Wow, we can hardly wait for further bottle ageing ..
