This precipitously steep and rocky vineyard, Wehlener Sonnenuhr (VAY-len-er ZON-en-ooer) yields some of the most elegant and sophisticated white wines in the world. It has very light soil and the purest blue slate of any Mosel vineyard. This gives the wine a lively minerality and a delicate, crisp acidity that perfectly balances the bright flavors of white peach and lemon. It’s an aristocratic and charming wine that dances gracefully on the palate.
The soil in Wehlen is composed of broken and weathered shards of the purest blue slate in the Mosel valley. This purity is reflected in the wines.
DR. LOOSEN ESTATE
The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen
assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that he had vines in some of Germany’s best-rated
vineyards. To maximize the potential of those vines, he restricts crop size, uses only organic
fertilization, insists on very strict fruit selection, and employs gentle cellar practices with a
minimum of handling.
THE MOSEL REGION
Located in far western Germany, the Mosel valley’s steep, southfacing slopes create the
perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. The cool climate
allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity.
WEHLENER SONNENUHR RIESLING KABINETT
The famous “sundial” vineyard, in the village of Wehlen, produces the quintessential Mosel
Riesling: delicate and refined, with a racy texture and endless charm. The early picked Kabinett
is the lightest and most delicate style of German Riesling. Nothing can compare with its
elegance and subtlety, as this wine proves with its fine fruitiness and exquisite balance.
THE 2018 VINTAGE
The 2018 Mosel harvest was the earliest ever recorded, but this we also had an early budbreak
and flowering, so the development period for the grapes was still within the ideal target range.
The harvest was characterized by good yields, healthy fruit at the beginning of harvest, and
very good quality. As the harvest progressed we were able to produce an excellent range of dry
wines, as well as wines from every Prädikat level, from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese.
